Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing content to appear in answers generated by AI search systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of adapting site content so it surfaces in answers produced by generative AI systems. The term gained wider use in 2023–2024 following work by researchers at Princeton and Allen AI.
GEO differs from traditional SEO in emphasis: LLMs weight entities, factual density, citations, FAQ structures, and freshness more heavily than classical search ranking does. In practice, this means structured data (JSON-LD), question-answer formatting, glossary-style definitions, and clear author authority signals (E-E-A-T).
GEO and SEO do not replace each other — together they cover both Google's organic results and generative AI responses.
